Each year an estimated 106,300 people in the United States are diagnosed with a blood related cancer.  These cancers account for 10.5% of all cancer deaths.  Every nine minutes another person dies from leukemia, lymphoma or myeloma.  In hopes of remedying this, we are pleased to announce that this year’s New York state charity is the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.  The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is the world’s largest voluntary organization dedicated to funding blood cancer research, education and patient services.

Here’s how you can help!  The Community Service Committee has developed the “Light the Way for Leukemia” program in which members sell their district-designated colored paper candles to raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.  At the State Leadership Conference, we will display the candles and “Light the Way for Leukemia!”  Our goal is to raise $5500, so it is  very important that we get an early start.

On the national level, we will be continuing our 30 year partnership with the March of Dimes Foundation.  Our goal is to raise $1500 for this worthwhile organization.  In order to achieve this goal, we will take part in two programs: Blue Jeans for Babies and Brainstorm for Babies.  To participate in Blue Jeans for Babies, chapters designate a day in November where students at their school wear blue jeans and pay a dollar to support the March of Dimes.  Those who support Blue Jeans for Babies will have the opportunity to purchase t-shirts and pins for the March of Dimes on that day.  Brainstorm for Babies is a program in which chapters design and implement original fundraising projects to raise additional funds for the March of Dimes.

In order to encourage community service in your local chapters, we will be continuing the “Local Community Service Projects” program.  Chapters create and implement their own community service projects to benefit their local communities and submit a form to be recognized.

As Future Business Leaders of America, we strive to uphold our motto of Service Education, Progress, so let’s do all we can to benefit these organizations as we are Piecing the Puzzle of Success!
